Keynote Q&A: DC the Brain Supreme
In the late-’80s, DJ Cecil Glenn was spinning at Magic City, one of America’s most-popular gentlemen’s clubs – also, Atlanta’s top venue for breaking new music. Over time, DC absorbed the wild atmosphere and saw what records worked, while also mentoring upcoming local performers like Lil Jon and Outkast. By the early ’90s, he’d formed Tag Team with Steve Rolln, a high-school friend and fellow MC/producer. In 1993, the duo struck platinum – four times platinum, to be exact – and everything changed.
That year, Tag Team topped all the charts with “Whoomp! (There It Is),” a deceptively clean tune inspired by Magic City, a very adult-themed nightclub. But leave it up to a tuned-in DJ to find the right angle to elevate a club’s catch phrase. In short order, the boomin’ single was everywhere – in clubs, on radio, in films, and on TV – eventually selling 4 million copies, making it one of hip hop’s biggest hits. Cut to the next scene, insurance giant GEICO comes calling, features Tag Team in its “Scoop! There It Is” campaign, and a career is revitalized.
But in the interim, DC wasn’t asleep. After a memorable stint DJing at Rupert’s, another legendary Atlanta nightspot, he threw himself into business, ultimately immersing himself in public speaking, voiceover work, and tech – SEO, social media, and eventually AI. When he’s not touring with Tag Team, he’s busy with a variety of endeavors, always looking for the next opportunity, but using the latest technologies to do it.
At this exclusive DJX Keynote Q&A, DC the Brain Supreme will tell the true story of a DJ who hit it big, but also had a second act to his career. He never stopped hustling and never stopped earning because he never stopped learning. Check out DC’s talk on Monday, Aug. 7, and learn some lessons.
