The Hidden Ingredient to DJ Success: It's Not What You Think
“The most important part about what we do as DJs is we bring people together to create a sense of community on the dancefloor, but we also can't forget about ourselves.”
By Sed The Saint, DJ and Founder of StageWing
Let's face it, DJing isn't just about spinning tunes. Sure, skill, the right gear, and a love for music are essential. But there's something even more powerful: community. The most important part about what we do as DJs is we bring people together to create a sense of community on the dancefloor, but we also can't forget about ourselves.
As an OG DJ with 20 years of experience, creating and maintaining relationships within the industry has been a key ingredient in my success and growth. And uniquely as a woman DJ, I've found that building strong connections with other women DJs is crucial, especially in a male-dominated industry. Organizations like the Female DJ Association are lifelines, offering support and resources. And booking agencies like Prism DJs are champions for talented women, creating opportunities for us to shine.
In fact, I founded StageWing to help foster more connections and collaborations within the industry. It's a platform designed to bring DJs together, making it easier to rent & receive equipment, increase earning potential and network with other event professionals.
When I first started my DJ journey, I was a broke college student in metro Atlanta, Georgia. It was through the support and collaboration of my college friend, DJ Wilbe, that we were able to pool our resources and invest in professional-grade QSC 15" 3-way speakers. This early partnership laid the foundation for our future successes.
Two years later, while spinning at a local skating rink, I met another DJ who introduced me to the world of Pioneer CDJs. This encounter opened up new possibilities and prepared me to elevate my craft on larger stages and club venues.
Perhaps one of the first significant gigs I've had through building my DJ network was securing my first international gig. This came about through a team of DJs who collaborated on providing at a prestigious resort.
These experiences underscore the power of community. Below I put together a list of tips to help you build your DJ tribe. Please note: Look to make genuine connections with other DJs that inspire you or whom you share common interests with - fake and/or forced connections are unnecessary and a bit played out. Be yourself and if someone doesn’t want to connect, don’t chase or worry. Your tribe will naturally form if you stay positive and open to meet new people.
Practical Tips for Building Your DJ Tribe:
1. Attend Industry Events:
○ DJ Conferences and Workshops: These events are excellent opportunities to meet other DJs and industry professionals.
○ Local Meetups and Mixhows: Participate in local gatherings to connect with DJs in your area.
2. Leverage Social Media:
○ Join Online Communities: Participate in DJ forums, groups, and social media platforms.
○ Engage with Other DJs: Like, comment, and share their posts to build relationships.
3. Collaborate with Other DJs:
○ Mixtapes and Remixes: Collaborating with other DJs can help you reach a wider audience and showcase your skills.
○ Joint Performances: Performing together can create a stronger bond and open up new opportunities.
4. Seek Mentorship and Sponsorship:
○ Find a Mentor: Seek guidance from experienced DJs who can offer advice and support.
○ Sponsor Up-and-Coming DJs: Mentoring and sponsoring emerging talent can strengthen your community and create a legacy.
5. Utilize Platforms Like StageWing:
○ Connect with Other DJs: Network and share with DJs from around the world.
○ Share Gigs and Equipment Rentals
Conclusion
In the world of DJing, community is the secret ingredient to long-term success. By actively engaging with other DJs, attending industry events, and collaborating on projects, you can unlock your full potential and achieve your goals.
Remember, the journey of a DJ is not something you have to do alone. Embrace the power of community, do your thing and pop off!
